The Pillow Debate: Memory Foam vs. Latex Foam

In today’s post, we discuss the chief differences between latex pillows and memory foam pillows. We will be looking at the features of each, the advantages and cons, and finally, we will be looking at whether one is better than the other.

Let us start by discussing what memory foam pillows are and how they support our sleep.

Memory foam pillows

Memory foam pillows have a number of advantages. Let us look at them, one by one.

Benefits of a memory foam pillow:

  1. Density

A memory foam pillow is dense and firm, which ensures that the sleeper’s neck is not bent unnaturally during sleep. It helps maintain the neck and spine in one straight line.

  1. Body contouring

Like a memory foam mattress, memory foam pillows too can adapt. These conform to the shape of the head of the sleeper. As a result, resting on a memory foam pillow can give you maximum comfort.

  1. Retains shape and size

Unlike other pillows, a memory foam pillow retains its body size and shape for a very long time; you do not need to flip these pillows to get them back to shape.

  1. Allows all sleeping styles

Whether you sleep on your back, your sides, or your stomach, a memory foam pillow will give you the same kind of comfort. Also, if you are a mixed sleeper – someone who transitions through the three sleeping styles in one night – a memory foam pillow works for you too.

  1. Reduces snoring

Since memory foam pillows elevate the head of the sleeper slightly, they lower his or her tendency to snore.

  1. Durable

Memory foam pillows last a long time. They are durable and retain their initial qualities for the entire period. This, however, depends on the way it has been used and maintained over the years.

  1. Hypoallergenic

Memory foam pillows keep all sorts of allergens away. They are anti-dust, anti-mite, and keep mold at bay. They remain hygienic and clean, and therefore enhance the overall freshness of your bedding.

The only problem with a memory foam pillow is: If not manufactured by the right brands, they can suffer from the inability to circulate heat and air. Therefore, when buying a memory foam pillow, you need to find out what cooling technology has been incorporated by the brand.

Some of the ways include having cooling crystals, gel memory foam, or a cool foam with an open-cell structure. If such a cooling technology has been included in the design, then a memory foam pillow is the ideal choice of pillow for you.

Latex pillows

A latex pillow is a well-known type of pillow. Its features include softness and ability to support. It also allows pressure relief in areas such as the neck, hips, shoulders and the joints. It is breathable and also allows temperature neutrality to an extent.

However, there are several disadvantages of a latex pillow which makes memory foam a better choice.  Let us have a look at these factors:

  1. It is a tough job for a customer to distinguish between natural latex pillows and one that it blended or synthetic.
  2. The smell of a latex pillow can be a problem for some people. While the smell is the strongest during the first few days of use, it remains for a very long time. For anyone allergic to the smell of any kind, a latex pillow may not be a good option.
  3. Latex pillow does not conform to the body shape of the sleeper. This gives memory foam a huge advantage over latex pillows.
  4. Latex pillows do not offer the same level of weight distribution as a memory foam pillow. As a result, your head might sink into the pillow, thus causing pain and snoring.

The conforming ability of a memory foam pillow is the chief reason why you should go for it. It alleviates the pressure felt by the sleeper’s neck, helps control snoring, and accommodates all sleeping positions. Could one ask for more?

Are you using a memory foam pillow? Does it regulate the temperature and circulate air well, through the night? How many stars would you give your memory foam pillow out of 5?
